Orbit – Lewisham Virtual School CAMHS

The Lewisham Virtual School CAMHS service supports the professional network around Children Looked After (CLA) to address emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs that may impact on engagement and attainment and increase risk of exclusion. CAMHS clinicians work together with Educational Psychology colleagues under the Orbit umbrella to offer a service to Lewisham Children Looked After.   They are identified by the professional network (Virtual School and Social Care) as children and young people who may benefit from a systemic approach to prevent further deterioration in educational outcomes or placement breakdown.

The service has been designed to be as flexible and responsive as possible, aiming to engage with requests within 7 days. All requests for involvement are facilitated through the Virtual School team, with referrals needing to be countersigned by the child or young person’s social worker.

Interventions provided by the service can include:

  • Improved understanding of a child/young person’s emotional well-being.
  • Support to key professionals working with a child/young person such as school staff, social workers, foster carers and residential placement staff. This support may include formal and informal consultations, offering a facilitated thinking space, and staff training.
  • Liaising and linking up with clinical CAMHS teams, alongside signposting to relevant agencies.
  • Ongoing network support for schools, placements and other professionals to manage mental health concerns in community and family settings. This may include school-based observations, consultation, training, reflective practice and direct support to professionals.
  • Supporting children and young people to engage with local CAMHS clinical services.
  • Reflective consultation slots for social workers and education staff to discuss cases with our team alongside Symbol (CAMHS CLA team) and Educational Psychologist (Orbit).

VS CAMHS work closely alongside clinical teams where appropriate, and the Virtual School to support children looked after in Lewisham.

The consultation request form must be completed and emailed to the relevant Phase Lead or High Intervention Team Worker at the Virtual School, who will ensure that the form is passed on.
